Mary Poppins and White Christmas Float Upon Billboard Chart

The cast recordings of Mary Poppins and White Christmas enter the Billboard Top Cast Album chart while Mamma Mia! surges back to the No. 2 slot. Decca Broadway's Wicked remains steady at the top of the chart for a 16th consecutive week. Rhino's Jersey Boys, which had kept pace right behind until this week, drops to No. 3. The new Masterworks Broadway release of A Chorus Line and Walt Disney Records' recording of The Lion King (which jumped up the chart two weeks ago from No. 12 to No. 4) round out the top five. Mary Poppins began its Broadway run at the New Amsterdam Theatre Oct. 14 which no doubt bolstered the Walt Disney original London cast recording to No. 8 on the chart. The Broadway production of Mary Poppins, which is currently a hit in London, will arrive on Saturday, October 14, 2006 at the New Amsterdam Theatre (Broadway at West 42nd Street) in preparation for a Thursday, November 16 opening night.Ashley Brown will play the role of Mary Poppins, and direct from the West End production of the show, Oliver Award nominee Gavin Lee will play Bert. Joining them will be Daniel Jenkins (Mr. Banks), Rebecca Luker (Mrs. Banks), Jane Carr (Mrs. Brill), Mark Price (Robertson Ay), Cass Morgan (Bird Woman), Ruth Gottschall (Miss Andrew), and Michael McCarty (Admiral Boom). Some people say goodbye with a hand wave; Cameron Mackintosh is putting on a show. As "Les Miserables" winds up 18 years of touring, producer Mackintosh is bringing the musical back to Broadway for a final bow. It's returning a little more than three years after it ended its 16-year run and is the third-longest-running show in Broadway history. "It's sort of my farewell to America," said the British producer, referring only to "Les Miz," not his other projects. (He's co-producing "Mary Poppins" this season.) "It's an extraordinary piece," he said of the dramatic musical based on Victor Hugo's epic novel. "We kept extending the tour. The reaction has been phenomenal. It's been back to some cities 10 or 11 times." Mackintosh, whose still-running "Phantom of the Opera" is the longest-lived show in Broadway history, said the quick revival of "Les Miz" -- probably the only show commonly known by its nickname -- is partly a result of circumstances....

CALLING all budding Julie Andrews and Michael Crawfords - the search for the international musical theatre stars of the future has begun. Auditions for the Welsh leg of BBC Radio 2's Voice of Musical Theatre competition will be held in Cardiff this Friday. Professional musical singers will perform before judges at the Wales Millennium Centre hoping to win a place in the finals to be held in Cardiff in October. The national competition is the centrepiece of the Cardiff International Festival of Musical Theatre and the winner has the chance of demo recordings and BBC broadcast engagements. ....

Gavin Creel Joins London Company of Mary Poppins July 26

The singing actor, who recently released his debut solo recording "Goodtimenation," will portray chimney sweep Bert, the role created on the West End stage by Gavin Lee. Lee, as previously announced, will co-star in the Broadway production of Mary Poppins, which is scheduled to begin performances at the New Amsterdam Theatre Oct. 14 with Ashley Brown in the title role. Gavin Creel was most recently on Broadway playing Jean-Michel in the revival of La Cage aux Folles at the Marquis Theatre. He portrayed Hollis Bessemer in Sondheim and John Weidman's Bounce and starred as Jimmy in the Tony-winning musical Thoroughly Modern Millie (Tony nomination for Best Actor in a Musical). The actor was also seen in the City Center Encores! mounting of Hair and the Off-Broadway production of Bat Boy....
