Music is not only about playing and listening to, nor is it only about singing. Music is there to lift your soul, move you and to make you move. Dance music

Throughout the years people have danced to music, be it classical, square dancing, American line dancing, irish jigs or the nightclubs of the 80's and 90's, dance music has paved the lives of every teenager, young adult and person who loves to dance.

Dance music has hit the chart highs, creating and following trends of the time such as techno and trance. Techno and trance dance music is for sure not about the lyrics. Does techno and trance even have lyrics? Belly dancing has become a popular sport.

Gyrating with chains and bells to traditional belly dancing music has become the rage. Not only is it a different medium of expression, it's also a great workout. Salsa is another dance craze that has taken the dance world by surprise. The latin moves and music can be seen and heard in nightclubs, bars, gyms and on TV.

Salsa steps are very much the trend. And with Salsa, it's all in the hips. The traditional wedding dance has been around since the start of time. The traditional rituals vary from culture to culture and religion to religion.

James Sewell Ballet brings spirited dance to Guthrie

The James Sewell Ballet kicked off its season at the Guthrie ? the first dance performance to grace that newly minted bastion of theater ? as Artistic Director Sewell delivered the famous "To be or not to be" soliloquy from Hamlet with a kinetic gravitas the Bard would have applauded. The program included a tribute to Jewish Klezmer music, a witty homage to Garrison Keillor's favorite detective and a luminous duet by Sally Rousse, who is married to Sewell and is the ballet's artistic associate. Rousse's "Brahms Duet" beautifully captures the ardently contrasting energies of Brahms's "Piano Concerto No. 1 in D Minor." She and guest artist Mariusz Olszewski skim and graze the floor in a dramatic current of movement, ruptured by anguished introspection. Oddly angled lifts reveal a pulsating anxiety, as if the two are most distant from one another when most intimately linked....

Fringe faves

Yes, it's time once again for the Philadelphia Live Arts Festival & Philly Fringe, that wacky, entertaining, eye-opening look at under-the-radar - and sometimes over-the-top - dance, music and theater from Philadelphia and around the world. Celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, Fringe continues to experiment with talent and to surprise with its lineup, from plays at the Kimmel Center's Perelman Theater to a night of electronica DJ music at University of Pennsylvania's Rotunda to extreme ballet at the Wilma Theater. And many of the 200-plus performances happening citywide between Friday and Sept. 16 have a common thread: More than ever before, productions will combine music, dance and theater, making it tough to categorize acts as a particular genre. "This is where contemporary performance is heading," said producing director Nick Stuccio....

Head's up: Yorke out to save dance music

With Thom Yorke, you expect the unexpected. He has opted against rock's established roads time and time again with Radiohead by carving out new paths with an ever-expanding musical scope. So while most singers tend to get more experimental on their solo albums, using the project to do songs their bands wouldn't do, it makes sense Yorke fills his first solo album, "The Eraser" (XL), with the catchiest, most immediate songs he has done in years. And, yes, you can dance, for inspiration. ....
