| 'Les Miserables' upsets 'Cats' | | Posted Thursday, October 12, 2006 7:11:08 AM by Blog57 Team | | The musical Les Miserables celebrates its 21st birthday in London this weekend, at the same time as snatching the record as the world's longest-runner from Cats. To celebrate, a special finale is planned for Saturday evening's show when Cats star Elaine Paige will hand over the mantle of longevity to the rival show. A spokewoman says former cast members will also take part in the one-off show. Les Miserables premiered on October 8, 1985 at the Barbican in London before transferring to the Palace in the famous West End theatre district. It moved again in April 2004, this time to the Queen's. A total of 54 million people have seen the show, which has played in 38 countries and 223 towns. The show has been translated into 21 languages and, from 2008, it will play in Mandarin in Shanghai.... | |

Cats, including older animals, will be available for adoption. All cats are neutered or spayed, have current vaccinations and have been tested for feline leukemia and FIV. Adoptive families must complete an application and sign an adoption contract. The cost is $100 for one cat or $150 for two. The club's mission is to prevent cats from being consigned to shelters. "This is something I dove in without reading the script because Andr 3000 was doing it and I was a huge fan of his. And I wasn't really in a position to be choosing characters like these themes, I couldn't choose at the time. [Director] Bryan Barber had called and I was trying to get my music off at the time. I was like, 'Yeah, I'll do the movie' thinking I'm gonna get an opportunity to do some music. And then I get there and start rehearsals and at rehearsal was literally the first time I saw the script because we finished 'Hustle & Flow' on the 9th of August. On the 10th I was on a plane. Or maybe it's just that Ken Gargaro is so intertwined with the group that the old name still works. Whatever its name, PMT has had good news. In the past two months it's received its first two national grants, $50,000 each from the Hearst and Hot Topic foundations in support of its educational activities, including scholarships for the Rauh Conservatory and support for the Pre-College Players (students from a dozen high schools who study intensively in a half-day program). Newly named PMT general manager Colleen Petrucci, who is also a resident choreographer, assisted on the gigantic Point State Park final shot for Carl Kurlander's movie, assembling 22 PMT students and alumni to dance their Pittsburgh spirit.... | |
