To celebrate Smokey Robinson's 50th anniversary as a recording artist, Reelin' In The Years Productions and Universal Music Enterprises are proud to announce the November 21, 2006 release of "Smokey Robinson & The Miracles -- Definitive Performances 1963 - 1987" on DVD. Featured for the first time on DVD are 15 classic full-length performances from Motown's pioneering vocal group taken from television appearances spanning their entire career. Also included are three performances of top-ten hits from Smokey Robinson's solo years. Issued with the full cooperation of The Miracles and their estates, this is the first official DVD anthology of classic archival television performances by the group. Continuing in the tradition of "Marvin Gaye -- The Real Thing In Performance 1964 - 1981" and "The Temptations -- Get Ready! The Definitive Performances 1965 - 1972," released earlier this year, the Smokey Robinson & The Miracles DVD includes a wealth of classic performances with re-mastered sound and video, plus, as an extra-special bonus, Smokey Robinson and original Miracles Pete Moore and Bobby Rogers reunite to give their first-ever in-depth interview about the history of the group -- more than 70 minutes of stories about The Miracles, Motown, and their incredible songs! "Smokey Robinson & The Miracles -- Definitive Performances 1963 - 1987" begins with a staggering performance of their 1962-63 hit "You've Really Got A Hold On Me" filmed at the Apollo Theatre during the famous 1963 Motortown Review....

Public voices support for Rackham

HUNTINGTON WOODS -- Obviously a brave man, Scott Kaufman of Huntington Woods stood up during the Rackham Golf Course public hearing Wednesday night and defended developers who want to turn it into housing. "Why isn't the zoo included (in the historic district)?" asked Kaufman, who said he's an investor in a development company that bid on Rackham. "This tactic seems to me to be a reach ... it's not usable green space. There's a big fence there. Sure, it's visibly green, but it's not the same thing as a park." Kaufman's opinion was unpopular in a room full of people angry at developers and offering to do anything to preserve the course. The meeting was held to let the public discuss whether Rackham should be designated as a historic district -- which could prohibit development....

David R. Ellis

David R. Ellis has had an unusual career in film: Starting out as a stuntman, he transitioned from stunt coordinator to second-unit director to director. He has helmed a sequel to Homeward Bound, the first sequel to Final Destination, and Cellular, a clever Larry Cohen-penned thriller. In spite of the widespread anticipation for Snakes On A Plane, it will not be screened for critics, in what's becoming a summer trend. The A.V. Club spoke to Ellis about this, and about fan involvement in the film's creative process. The A.V. Club: We haven't seen the movie yet because it isn't being screened for critics. So? is it any good? David R. Ellis: It's great. It fucking rocks. The decision to not screen it for critics was mine, the reason being? and it's the same reason that we didn't test the movie....

Smokey bringing Motown to Tacoma

Smokey Robinson has written more than 1,000 songs, recorded 36 Top-40 hits, and is revered as one of the most soulful singers and gifted songwriters of his era. Bob Dylan called him "America's greatest living poet," and the late George Harrison loved him so much that he wrote a song for him, simply titled "Pure Smokey." But as Robinson hits the road this summer, the veteran tunesmith isn't just taking along his own songs. He's got a brand new album, "Timeless Love," which features his distinctive reworkings of pop, jazz and big-band classics, some dating as far back as the 1920s. "This is the music that was being played in our house when I was growing up," Robinson said recently from his home in Los Angeles. "I had two older sisters and my mom, and that was the music they played....

Smokey Robinson: A Romantic Walk On Memory Lane

It's legitimate to wonder why one of the most accomplished pop songwriters of all time, a man Bob Dylan himself once famously described as "America's greatest living poet" -- Mr. William "Smokey" Robinson -- should stoop to singing other people's lyrics. On the other hand, if hammy vocalists such as Rod Stewart can garner platinum by bludgeoning the Great American Songbook (with Michael Bolton next up with the sledgehammer), why should one of our more sophisticated romantic crooners be deprived of the chance to sample that songbook's treasure-trove of sentiment? Robinson's "Timeless Love" is music marinated in blissful contentment, suffused in woo that's been pitched and received. The dramatic tension of the chase has been resolved, leaving a stately calm in the wake of that Quiet Storm....
