Despite victory, offensive errors frustrate Bower

NEW ORLEANS ? Southern Miss defeated Tulane 31-3 here Saturday, but the one-sided score doesn't give an accurate indication of the precarious situation the Golden Eagles faced as late as the fourth quarter. Despite dominating the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball, USM led by only 10-3 as the fourth quarter began. Furthermore, the error-prone Eagles had lost starting center Robby D'Angelo, starting right tackle Ryan McKee and starting tight end Shawn Nelson to injuries. Along the sidelines, USM coach Jeff Bower looked concerned, frustrated and angry - all at once. "No consistency," he said later. "We had penalties, dropped passes, missed assignments. ... we just weren't sharp. We had so many opportunities that we didn't capitalize on. We didn't have very good execution offensively." Bower wasn't understating....

Perry makes quick stops in smaller towns

Darting in and out of airport buildings, Republican Gov. Rick Perry made quick stops across Texas today and said he's aggressively seeking votes even in places that aren't "slam dunk" Republican. Perry said he's done all he can to win support in big conservative strongholds before Tuesday's election. "We're going to places these last few days that have not been historic Rick Perry places," Perry said in an interview with The Associated Press on his campaign plane. He said he's not worried about how big a percentage of the vote he gets in Tuesday's election, as long as he finishes first. "I'm not a run-up-the-score guy," Perry said. "I understand I've got to get more votes than Number Two." He's long predicted that Democrat Chris Bell whom he repeatedly labels a Washington liberal will be the second-place candidate in the unconventional, five-way race....

Jackson State extends streak over Valley

Jackson State continued its dominance over Mississippi Valley State. The Tigers overcame a 10-point, first-half deficit to pull out a 29-24 victory on Saturday before an announced Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium crowd of 21,050. It was the Tigers' 12th straight win over Valley (3-2 overall, 2-2 SWAC). The Delta Devils' last win over Jackson State was 1994, when Moss Point's Keith Poindexter started at quarterback. "The streak is something we should be proud of (at Jackson State)," Tigers coach Rick Comegy said. Valley coach Willie Totten can't explain why the Delta Devils can't beat Jackson State (2-1, 1-0). "I don't know what happened," Totten said. "Jackson State made plays in the second half and wanted it more than we did....

Brazil's Beautiful `House of Sand'; `Half Nelson': Rick Warner

Aug. 11 (Bloomberg) -- Imagine a place so isolated that World War I and the first moon landing could occur without anyone hearing about them. Such a place exists in ``House of Sand,'' a magnificent Brazilian film about three generations of women from one family living on the barren dunes of the country's northeastern coast. Co-starring Fernanda Montenegro and her daughter Fernanda Torres in multiple roles, it's a visually spectacular and emotionally penetrating movie that has its U.S. premiere today in New York and Los Angeles. ``House of Sand'' spans six decades (1910-1969), a period that included two world wars, the advent of space travel and the birth of rock 'n' roll. Those are distant events for the women of northern Maranhao, who sleep in thatched huts, raise goats and eat fish with their hands while having virtually no contact with the outside world....

Big changes coming to Carls Corner

By Tim Woods Tribune-Herald staff writer CARL’S CORNER — Since it opened in 1984, Carl’s Corner has become many different things to different people. To the disheveled dad who has been driving for hours with his family, Carl’s Corner is an oasis where he can gas up while the kids check out the Willie Nelson merchandise and marvel at the two large dancing frogs that adorn the building. To the road-weary trucker, Carl’s Corner is a place to grab a bite, say hello to some friendly, if unfamiliar, faces and fill up the tank with some environmentally friendly biodiesel. To country music fans, Carl’s Corner is an intimate venue to see Willie Nelson or an up-and-comer like Pat Waters. In fact, spend enough time at Carl’s Corner and you just might bump into Willie as he fills his tour bus with the biodiesel he uses in all of his vehicles....

Prior to the 11-5 loss to the Schaumburg Flyers at CanWest Global Park, the Fish signed David Gates to a contract. The 25-year-old joins the club after requesting his release from the Arkansas Travelers of the Texas (AA) League. Gates spent the last five seasons in the Los Angeles Angels system, where he hit .256 with 57 home runs and 253 RBI in his five-plus years of organizational ball. The 6-foot-1, 220-pound outfielder went 1-for-5 with a run scored in his Northern League debut. After the game, Fish manager Rick Forney released veteran first baseman Keith Maxwell. ....
