| | | Flea Jams With Patti Smith, Punks Weep At CBGB's Last-Ever Show | | Posted Saturday, October 28, 2006 2:55:01 PM by Blog57 Team | | It was the last night for seminal punk club CBGB, which is closing this week after a lengthy rent dispute ended with the building's owner, the nonprofit Bowery Residents' Committee, opting not to renew 76-year-old owner Hilly Kristal's lease. The media folk were gunning for just the right shot — which they got when punk legend Patti Smith, CBGB's final performer, stepped outside into the crush to snap some Polaroids of the club's faded awning. The aged punks — who seemed to feel it was their right to be there even if they didn't have a ticket for the gig — wanted to be a part of rock and roll history and kiss one of the city's most beloved musical landmarks goodbye. The rest of the mob just wanted to party. The police showed up too. The cluttered sidewalk choked off the flow of pedestrian traffic, forcing the club's security to constantly ask revelers to move along until something dawned on them — if the club was issued a ticket, "We won't have to pay it," as one employee declared.... | |

| | | Lollapalooza 2006 - Day 3 | | Posted Wednesday, August 09, 2006 9:09:57 PM by Blog57 Team | | My final day at Lollapalooza 2006 kicked off in the Kidzapalooza area among the youngest festival fans. Lollapalooza founder Perry Farrell performed a brief set with his former Porno for Pyros bandmate Peter DiStefano. It was followed by a true bonding across generations when legendary punk poetess Patti Smith took the stage with acoustic guitar in hand to perform for the kids. This brief sojourn in the extensive childrens' area of the festival helped set the stage for a day quieter than the extravaganza of Saturday but filled with moments of musical transcendence reaching across musical genres and generations. Some of my favorite discoveries of the festival came on Sunday. Ireland's the Frames made the most of their hour of performance time in a trademark "whisper to a scream" style that was punctuated by an impromptu Beatle Bob interpretive dance performance.... | |

| | | Leibovitz's powerful 'Women' speak for themselves | | Posted Saturday, July 01, 2006 1:08:20 AM by Blog57 Team | | For this Independence Day weekend, a focus on deconstructing Americana seems like the patriotic thing to do. The Pensacola Museum of Art's two shows have spanned this patriotic period between Memorial Day and July 4th, a pillar of American tradition right out of a textbook. One of the shows, a survey of Norman Rockwell's Saturday Evening Post covers, concludes tomorrow, but the focus of today's column, "Annie Leibovitz: Women," runs through July 15.Rockwell's work still is the affectionate canon for post-War America, with all its wealth, power and insularity. Leibovitz has had a succinct tenure thus far, but her photography has managed to shoehorn its way into the Yankee psyche. Rockwell lionized the presidents, while Leibovitz started her career capturing legendary rock stars.Leibovitz's images do not usurp Rockwell's drawings in terms of raw content.... | |
