| Opera House memories | | Posted Thursday, September 21, 2006 7:03:25 PM by Blog57 Team | | May I add my accolades for all those who have had a part in the restoration of our magnificent opera house and the exciting programming that has been scheduled. May I also make just a small correction to the statement that the opening night nearly two weeks ago was the first time than an audience had sat in the seats or a performance been given on the stage since 1927. On March 29 and 30, 1991, the music and drama ministry of Midway Baptist Church, under the premise of bringing the Gospel to the marketplace, present the musical drama, "The Promise" — a pageant on the life of Jesus Christ, by Gary Rhodes. About 100 musicians, actors, directors and staging assistants had a part in the presentations in the old, dusty, unrestored, but still awesome structure. Little did we imagine the glory to which she would be raised, but we knew it was a jewel just waiting to be resurrected by creative and generous minds, hearts and hands.... | |

| | | About The Sydney Opera House | | Posted Wednesday, August 09, 2006 5:05:12 AM by Blog57 Team | | The Sydney Opera House is probably one of the most recognizable features of the city of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. The opera house is much loved in Sydney, and has a unique history. The design of the Sydney Opera House was the result of a contest. Whoever submitted the most desirable design won the distinction of being the creator. In the 1940s, Sydney felt the need for a larger establishment to host fine arts productions, but it took a long time for the Sydney Opera House to open. In the 1950s, the government of Australia decided to raise funds for the needed facility, and held a competition to decide on the design. A Dane by the name of Jorn Utzon won the competition with his innovative design for the opera house. The problem was that his design was ahead of its time, and it had to be reworked.... | |

A classically trained musician, Mifsud has throughout the years been able to gain valuable musical know-how by getting on board various projects involving orchestras, brass bands and a multitude of other performances. "I’ve been working as a full time musician with the National Orchestra for the past 8 years," he says, "but apart from my full-time job I am constantly involved with other projects, mostly local productions of musicals or theatrical performances." When asked about the many influences on his musical career Mifsud speaks about his years as a member of the Johann Strauss Big Band.... | |

| | | Bush town clashes over opera house plan | | Posted Friday, June 30, 2006 9:11:14 AM by Blog57 Team | | DUBBO, Australia, June 28 (UPI) -- The bush town of Dubbo, Australia, wants to build a $14 million theater to attract more doctors and lawyers to the community. Mayor Allan Smith said it has been hard to attract professionals to the inland community of 38,000 because the city could not offer a full range of cultural activities to their families. "I had to go to Melbourne to see 'Phantom of the Opera,'" town councilor Rod Towney told the Sydney Morning Herald. "Why shouldn't I be able to watch world-class musicals and arts events in Dubbo?" But another member of the town council, Ben Shields, opposes the project because of a proposed 17 percent tax increase to pay for it. "At a time when half of Dubbo's rural roads are dirt, we're building theatre complexes," said Shields.... | |
