Community theater at its best

Actors and actresses from across Northwest Indiana will dress up in their best for the Northwest Indiana Excellence in Theatre Foundation's 14th Annual Awards Gala Saturday night.Attendees at the black-tie event, held at LaPorte's Civic Auditorium, will be treated to excerpts from the productions nominated for Best Play and Best Musical. The Foundation recognizes the work of actors, directors, musicians and technicians from 14 community theatre groups throughout Lake, Porter and LaPorte counties. Starting Aug. 4, the Vienna Community Center will be invaded by pickpockets, thieves and sundry characters from 19th century London as the Vienna Youth Players take the stage with "Oliver!" a musical take on Charles Dickens' "Oliver Twist" adapted by Lionel Bart. The 44-member cast ranges in age from 10 to 18 and includes both newcomers and veterans to the stage, as well as a "full-bred mutt" named Snickers. "Basically the audience can look forward to a somewhat professional production with people performing beyond their years," said Babs Dyer, director of "Oliver!" The story follows a young orphan named Oliver as he is forced onto the street from the workhouse and is taken in by the Artful Dodger who pulls him into Fagin's den of pickpockets. A character named Nancy mothers the boy and protects him from her brutal boyfriend, Bill Sikes, even with her life....

REVIEW: 'Oliver!' stumbles but entertains with heart

Seeing "Oliver!," a wonderful musical by Lionel Bart that isn't staged very often, makes you wonder about "Annie," an agreeable but undistinguished show that's performed all the time. Based on Charles Dickens' novel, "Oliver Twist," it's the story of an adorable, abused London urchin who finds his true family — wealthy and aristocratic — thanks to a mystery locket. "Annie" deals with an adorable, abused New York orphan. After she learns the truth about her past, thanks to a mystery locket, a wealthy, powerful man adopts her. But "Annie" is a children's show, a dependable draw with the Muny's big family audience. "Oliver!," on the other hand, is a show about children society ignores; that's a much tougher go. Still, there are lots of children on Steve Gilliam's fluid Muny set, where "Oliver!" opened Monday....
