Co-writers Reginald Kelly and Kenneth Johnson have injected some pertinent historical and cultural bits as narrator "Soul Man," Leon S. Copeland, delivers most of these spoken factoids between the cast's numerous exits and entrances. This entertaining production has a few weak points....

Brown, the 73-year-old singer who recorded the top 10 hit ``Papa's Got a Brand New Bag'' in 1965, is seeking a $25.2 million loan through Royal Bank of Scotland to pay off $20 million in bonds sold seven years ago that are backed by his music rights. Pullman arranged the first music-bond sale in 1997 for rock star David Bowie. Brown's catalog includes ``Cold Sweat,'' ``Hot Pants,'' ``The Payback'' and ``I Got You (I Feel Good).'' ``These are great assets,'' Pullman said in an interview from New York....
