Marijuana and music go hand in hand, and Showtime's hit series "Weeds" has stepped right up to take advantage of this relationship. For season two of the show, "Weeds"' theme song, "Little Boxes" by Malvina Reynolds, will be reinterpreted each week by a different artist. Musicians signed up for this cover extravaganza include Elvis Costello, Death Cab for Cutie, Jenny Lewis, the Polyphonic Spree's Tim DeLaughter, Regina Spektor, Englebert Humperdinck, McGarrigle Sisters, Tom Maxwell and Ken Mosher (formerly from Squirrel Nut Zippers), and Ozomatli. There has been no word as to whether or not these tracks will be released. The second season of the series kicks off on August 14 and will feature guest appearances from Zooey Deschanel and Snoop Dogg, who will play himself and record a pot-related number on the show....

'Weeds' cultivates local exposure

STEVENSON RANCH - It's not the first time the song "Little Boxes" has been hummed when someone overlooks the sprawling community of Stevenson Ranch. But Showtime helped put the Santa Clarita neighborhood on the map, featuring the '60s era protest anthem - inspired by either hillside homes in Daly City or the nation's first housing tract in Levittown, N.Y. - as the theme song for its homage to suburbia, "Weeds." In the first season, Malvina Reynolds, who wrote the song in 1961, sings it over the titles. As the second season unwinds, the song is crooned by artists like Elvis Costello and Death Cab for Cutie. "Weeds," now a cult favorite probably headed for a third season, tells the story of a suburban widow (Mary Louise Parker) who becomes a marijuana dealer to make ends meet....

Costello, Toussaint impress rainy Blossom

Elvis Costello and Allen Toussaint's collaboration, The River In Reverse, was born in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, which drove the New Orleans music legend from his hometown. Friday night at Blossom, shortly before the nearly three-hour concert featuring Costello, his band, the Imposters, Toussaint and The Crescent City Horns, Mother Nature seemed to remind stalwart concertgoers of the project's impetus with frequent lightning, thunder and torrential rain. The pavilion-only show was sparsely populated, which allowed the sound to bounce off the empty seats, muddying the mix a bit. The folks who were there spent the first two songs -- a peppy (What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love and Understanding? and the more recent Monkey To Man -- making an exodus to the empty seats in the front, followed by a reluctant trickle to the back with quickly tightened Blossom security at their heels as Toussaint entered and sang A Certain Girl, an early hit for The Yardbirds....
