| Ask the DJ | Paul Oakenfold | | Posted Monday, October 16, 2006 11:05:05 AM by Blog57 Team | | If any one name perfectly embodies the term ''superstar DJ,'' it's got to be Paul Oakenfold. He's simply done it all in the electronic and rock music worlds, from producing bands, remixing countless hit tracks, headlining at the world's hottest nightclubs, creating sizzling compilation mixes for Perfecto and Global Underground labels and being chosen as the opening DJ on U2's world tour in the '90s, and now Madonna's shows in Europe. Oakie took time to talk to The Miami Herald to tout his show Saturday night at Mansion. He'll spin along with Sandra Collins; 305-531-5535. Q: How did the Madonna shows go? Really well -- it was great to be on tour with a huge amount of people. One show was 95,000 people. It was nerve-racking, but worth it. I was gonna do the American leg, but due to a lot of the venues being union-run and the times they open and close, I would have been onstage for about 20 minutes.... | |

| | | Microsoft picks Toshiba to build media player | | Posted Monday, August 28, 2006 3:10:40 AM by Blog57 Team | | Microsoft's challenge to Apple's reigning iPod MP3 players will be built by Toshiba and allow people to "DJ" by wirelessly sharing music. Plans submitted to the US Federal Communications Commission by Japanese electronics giant Toshiba provide a glimpse at the workings of an MP3 player designed by Microsoft Corporation, based in Redmond, Washington. The device was referred to in the filing by the code name "Pyxis". Microsoft has vowed to release a "Zune" MP3 player and matching online music and video store in time for the year-end holiday shopping season. "I can confirm that Toshiba is manufacturing the device and that the FCC report is legitimate," a Microsoft spokeswoman said, "but no further details." The Microsoft MP3 player would tune in to FM radio as well as enable users to transfer video, pictures and music files between personal computers and the handheld devices.... | |

| | | Various (mixed by DJ Andy Smith) - Trojan Document | | Posted Monday, July 24, 2006 5:18:54 AM by Blog57 Team | | The man who provided Portishead with their samples shows off his music knowledge on this journey through reggae's various sub-genres (Ska, Rocksteady, etc). Interestingly, tracks are presented in roughly chronological order and often a vocal version will appear alongside its dub version (so one can appreciate this precursor to the modern practice of remixing). Andy Smith has also written extensive sleeve notes for Trojan Document, making it a nice guide for newcomers. .... | |

| | | 'Beatmania' may fuel your DJ fantasies | | Posted Wednesday, July 19, 2006 3:04:06 PM by Blog57 Team | | This is JB the DJ spinning at a club so exclusive that only the chosen few can get in. We've got it all ? pop, techno, drum 'n' bass, trance, rave, electronica, hip-hop, dance, reggae and the freshest house music. And if you don't have an invite, you're left outside the velvet rope. Then again, not many people are lining up to get into my basement. I may not be a hot club DJ, but "Beatmania" makes me feel like one. Konami's latest hardware gaming device simulates a DJ's console and challenges you to lay down hot tracks with such masters of the field as Moby and DJ Nagureo. The hardware consists of a turntable and a soundboard that kind of looks like a piano keyboard with white and black buttons. Like other popular hardware/software combination games I have played ("Pump It Up: Exceed," "Guitar Hero," "Karaoke Revolution"), the object is to interact with the hardware at the correct time.... | |
