Campaign-finance reports for City Councilmen Michael Berry and Jarvis Johnson, recently requested by Harris County prosecutors, lack details required by state law, a review of the records shows. Berry and Johnson were the only elected city officials who didn't list the addresses of people and companies they paid during the two most recent campaign filing periods. ....

You can't move your feet to the lyrics

I CAN HEAR Leo Sayer now, singing, "I feel like dancing, dancing" and sounding like the Bee Gees in "Saturday Night Fever," which makes The Grump want to get out on the floor and show some moves. I'm not John Travolta, don't get me wrong, but I do get "Night Fever" from time to time. That's when I want to hit the clubs and work on my footwork. You dig? However, there are no clubs to hit. Every favorite dance place of mine in the Bay Area no longer plays the music I like, from blues to rhythm and blues to that good old time rock'n' roll. Every club I used to dance at has switched to hard rock, hip-hop and rap, which isn't dance music at all in The Grump's humble opinion. How do you swing to words with no musical backup? Defeats the whole purpose....

GREENVILLE - A night filled with good music, good company, a table decorating contest and swing dancing to the music made popular by the big band sounds of the 1930s and 40s - the Delta Symphony Association has all that in store for members on Saturday at E.E. Bass Cultural Center when Danny Blurton brings his Swing Machine to town.“It don't mean a thing if you ain't got that swing" is the theme for the Saturday concert set to begin at 7:30 p.m. in Jake and Freda Stein Hall. The concert is the first offering for the 2006-2007 Delta Symphony Association season.“This has always been a popular concert event for the Delta Symphony Association," said DSA President David Lush. “Patrons can come and just have a great time either listening to the big band sounds or getting out on the dance floor and showing off those dancing shoes."Winners will be selected in the dance competition as well as the table decoration contest again this year....

All hail Chuck Berry

To celebrate Chuck Berry's 60th birthday in 1986, a group of legendary musicians gathered at the Fox Theatre in St. Louis to perform Berry's signature tunes. And finally ``Hail! Hail! Rock 'n' Roll!,'' Taylor Hackford's filmed document of the concert and the circumstances surrounding it, comes to DVD. It's a vibrant film that absolutely crackles when showcasing Berry in his environment: onstage, ax in hand. The excellent two-disc package (Image, $29.99, also available in a four-disc set at $49.99) comes with an impressive set of extras. ``Hail! Hail!'' gives a warts-and-all account of Berry's life and career, featuring interviews with its subject and his contemporaries, including Little Richard, Bo Diddley and Roy Orbison, who didn't participate in the concert but give their thoughts on Berry's influence on the music industry....

And Some Of Us Was Born To Run Out On Highway Sixty-One

I am not like the rest of you, but I have learned there are more like me than most of you know. I know that first fact from coming up on six decades of being me and studying you. I have learned the second and satisfying truth because instead of sleeping Monday nights I write these small and variable and variously successful essays. For several years each died with the composting or burning or re-pulping of the newspaper that housed it, but now I hurl many of them out over the indiscriminate spray of electrons and photons and perturbations of the ether that connects us all except the very poor or the seriously curiosity compromised. They lodge up against the firewalls and spam filters of strangers, some of whom report back to me that as I have said, so do they feel, and thank you Mr. Cooper, I didn't know someone so distant could know me so well....
