Review: Ukiah Community Concerts Assocication first concert of 2006-2007 season

Hot jazz or "Jass" as it was first called and cool blues music rocked the Ukiahi auditorium on Monday as Andy Stein's Blue Four opened the 60th season of the Ukiah Community Concerts. Andy took the willing audience on a delightful and sometimes amusing musical journey from the early 1900s up to the time of the mid-40s. The very early days of Ragtime which led into Jazz were explored. Stein sang and fiddled skillfully as the narration progressed through the years. Conal Fowkes (originally from Leicester, England) on the tinkling piano, Matt Munisteri on acoustic guitar and Scott Robinson on an assortment of horns produced some astounding sounds. Each musician contributing to the pattern of the piece as well as playing brilliant solo spots from time to time. Such titles as "Beat n the Dog," "Just Notes," "Sugar Foot Stomp," "Goin Places," "Doin Things," really tore up the room....

Kudos to Arvada, Edgewater and Wheat Ridge

Kudos and sincere thanks to the parks and recreation departments of the above-mentioned cities for offering free musical concerts in their parks again this summer. And a heavy-handed slap on the wrist to the city of Lakewood's Department of Community Resources for charging $6 per person for their outdoor summer concert series. It is truly ironic that the city of Lakewood finds it necessary to charge the public (and especially senior citizens who frequently constitute a large percentage of summer concert attendees) for their concerts. Not only is Lakewood larger and wealthier than any of the above-mentioned neighbor cities, but it draws financial contributions from similar organizations (i.e., SCFD in particular). As a Lakewood resident who has provide transportation to these concerts for seniors during the past two months, I am ashamed of my city of residence and call on the SCFD and other nonprofit organizations to deny future funding to Lakewood for summer concerts unless they eliminate their self-enriching concert fees....

POLICE: Four drug busts outside Ridgefield Playhouse concerts
Posted Saturday, August 26, 2006 11:05:50 AM by Blog57 Team
Two concerts by former Grateful Dead musician Bob Weir and Ratdog at the Ridgefield Playhouse were apparently connected with a handful of drug arrests Monday and Tuesday. The same thing happened last summer when Mr. Weir played here. At that time, police observed that few concert-goers probably realized that the police station was next door to complex holding the Playhouse. On Monday at about 8:39 p.m., police charged Joshua Keyser, 28, of Doylestown, Pa., with possession of marijuana and failure to keep prescription drugs in an original container after he was observed smoking marijuana in plain view in the Playhouse parking lot. He was released on $50 bond. Around the same time, Brent Arrowitz, 19, of Overlook Drive was charged with possession of narcotics after a plainclothes officer observed him with black tar heroin....

Officials at Florida Tech's WFIT 89.5FM recently learned the station has qualified for a public broadcasting grant of $111,945 from the Florida Department of Education. The grant will be apportioned quarterly and will fund improved programming and outreach programs. "The grant will help fulfill our mission of educating our listening audience in East Central Florida," said WFIT station manager Terri Wright in a press statement released Wednesday. Part of the grant, she said, will go to WFIT's building fund to be held for the station's future relocation. The station is now housed in the basement of Roberts Hall, a Florida Tech residence on the college's campus. The grant also will help support an additional monthly concert in the "Random Acts of Music" series at Wickham Park....
