| | | A Chorus Line Dancers We Signed Our Lives Away | | Posted Thursday, October 05, 2006 7:06:02 PM by Blog57 Team | | The dancers who inspired A CHORUS LINE are fuming because they won't receive royalties from the forthcoming Broadway revival of the musical. A Chorus Line has grossed $280 million (GBP149 million) worldwide, and the original production was the longest-running show in Broadway history. Its origins lie in a late-night gathering at a rehearsal studio in Manhattan in January 1974, where choreographer MICHAEL BENNETT invited 19 of Broadway's best dancers to talk about their lives. The dancers spent more than 12 hours sharing their experiences, and these memories form the basis of the show. Bennett later arranged to split a portion of the box office takings and royalties with them, but these royalty agreements apply only to the original production - and not a revival. WAYNE CILENTO, one of the dancers, claims, "When we were young and stupid, we kind of signed our lives away, and they exploited that.... | |

| | | `Chorus Line' needs a revival of the heart | | Posted Tuesday, August 22, 2006 5:22:49 PM by Blog57 Team | | If the new Broadway-bound revival of ``A Chorus Line'' got a score card, the dancing would rate a near-perfect 10, the acting a meager 3 and the directing, well, that approaches zero. Bob Avian's formulaic production, now trying out at San Francisco's Curran Theatre before marching on Broadway, has all the moves but none of the heart. Avian worked with Michael Bennett on perfecting that now-famous footwork back in 1975, when ``A Chorus Line'' first opened on Broadway. It went on to run for 15 years (6,137 performances!), winning nine Tony Awards and the Pulitzer Prize. It's now the gold standard of backstage musicals, the show that lives in the heart of anybody who ever wanted to make it in the theater. And watching top-of-the-line dancers snap and pop through Bennett's landmark choreography still makes for a thrilling combination.... | |

| | | Levine, in superb form, returnsto lead BSO at Tanglewood | | Posted Sunday, July 09, 2006 7:03:17 PM by Blog57 Team | | LENOX -- A standing ovation from a gala-opening audience at Tanglewood Friday night greeted the new trim-line James Levine's first public walk to the podium in four months. The Boston Symphony's music director was back in action after his onstage fall last march in Symphony Hall after this very program -- Schoenberg and Beethoven -- and subsequent rotator cuff surgery. Levine may not yet be ready to dance Prince Siegfried in ``Swan Lake," but he's lighter and more secure on his feet and visibly overjoyed to be back in his favorite element, music -- sometimes he looked like a baby, splashing in the water. He's still more comfortable conducting from a chair, but he got so excited he leaped out of it at the end of the ``Ode to Joy" that crowns Beethoven's Ninth Symphony.... | |
